2008 NeostaatsbuergerInnen / Neo-citizens. Video, 15min, deutsch/englisch, 2006/08

ENGL. Neo-citizens Video, 15min, german/englisch, 2006/08

A „Celebration of the new citizens of vienna“ is held every year by the city council of vienna for the recently naturalized migrants.
People who have just gained citizenship celebrate with the civil servants of vienna in the city hall their political integration and inclusion into the welfare state austria.
In 2006 a new immigration law was passed with restrictive conditions concerning the stay of migrants in austria. Furthermore this law impedes the process to acquire the austrian citizenship. What does the „new nationality“ mean for people who have recently gained citizenship? To what extent are the new citizens, due to their social and political rights, able to change the current (post fascist) austria?
